Why? And Childlike Faith

Derek Zoolander: But why male models?

J.P. Prewitt: Male models don’t think for themselves.

Derek Zoolander: That’s not true!

J.P. Prewitt: Yes it is, Derek.

Derek Zoolander: Ok.

Derek is like so many of us. Even when we do ask ‘why?’ we are quick to back down at the hint of opposition. We are male models.

Why is the most important question.

Jesus told us we needed faith like a child. But I don’t think that means blind faith and obedience! I actually think it means the opposite. How many kids do you know who ask “why?” a thousand times? All of them. They ask “why?” beyond reason – sometimes to the brink of madness for us parents.

Kids want to know why things are the way they are and why they should believe it – grown ups don’t.

Kids are inquisitive. Not to be rebellious but to learn through testing assumptions. They aren’t scared of getting a truthful answer or of an answer they don’t understand (they will just ask “why?” again). They are still malleable and have no vested interest in a particular answer.

That’s what I think Jesus meant. Be willing to test your own assumptions. Ask why and be willing to accept the answer.
